Ferrero Rondnoir and dark discoveries

In the latest issue of  The Dispensary we ran a competition to win a table for 4 at the Ferrero Rondnoir 'Dinner of Discovery' with Chef Tobie Puttock. Congratulations to Monika of Jannali.

The question we posed: What dark discovery have you recently made?

Some of the more fascinating responses:
  • There is no doggie heaven and tofu tastes like mothballs
  • A little bit of grated dark chocolate on top of this amazing beef spare ribs dish I make compliments it and always surprises my guests!
  • Revealed a hidden family secret that has intrigued generations of my mother's family
  • Dark chocolate drizzled over fresh orange pieces – absolutely delicious, with a glass of red it is my new nightly ritual!
  • I have to admit my infidelity...I have cheated on Ferrero Rocher with their devil dark other half; Ferrero Rondnoir, will I ever be forgiven?!
  • The location of the mussels! My brother’s ex-girlfriend performed the age-old break-up revenge tactic of hiding mussels around my brother’s room which, over time, stunk not only my brother’s room out but our entire house! After weeks of investigation and angst-filled searching we finally located the rotten and decomposing little suckers! Phew!
  • Port and dark chocolate: absolute heaven
  • The beauty of the space under my desk for a mid afternoon snooze!
  • That my niece does not share the love of chocolate I have, when given some she said “yuck”.  I’m not sure our relationship can continue.

Road trip to Hunter Valley - Piggs, antiques and smelly cheese

This little piggy went to market...this little piggy stayed at home. This little piggy was on to a good thing; and it was called Piggs Peake.

I'm not saying I'm a smart piggy, but read on if you like gelati, cheese, antiques and decent wines - reasonably priced with a strong whiff of cheek.

During the long weekend Hunter Valley road trip we replenished cellar supplies and found ourselves at Piggs Peake for one of the many tastings. The wine names are endearing: Pig Brusco, Sweetbreads, Sowvignon Blanc. On Farrah and Justin's recommendation we asked for the Vedelho decanter (great for a present). Wolfie Zinfidel came up trumps as our wine pick of the day.

The gents (Steve Langham and Michael Partridge) also let us in on their plans for a new varietal being worked on.  He was tight lipped, but they did reveal that it's going to be called "Bush Pig".

Across the road from the winery there's the Hermitage Road Antiques store (more of a warehouse) that has some brilliant collectibles and nautical treasures.  Well worth a diversion from the tastings path.

We spent plenty of time at the Fromagerie too - Binnorie's dairy, Hunter Valley's Cheese Club and the Smelly Room attached to Tempus Two. The gelati fridges made us very happy, but we couldn't quite figure out what was with the 'horny caramel' and 'viagra blackberry yoghurt' flavours?

Not Quite Nigella ยป The cooking, eating and travel blog of a hungry blogger from Sydney

Lorraine (Ms NQN) is a lady with one of the best food porn websites we've come across. We just have issues with her because every time we read her blog, a ravenous desire takes over and diet predictably falls apart.
