Show Queen Launch @ Kit & Kaboodle

For those who seek a little song, dance and laughter to their Sunday evenings, a Show Queen night might just be for you. Previously housed at Will and Toby's, this cabaret troupe has relocated over to Kit & Kaboodle and to launch this evening, Trevor Ashley presented an impressive line up of talented performers from the Music Theatre and Cabaret worlds. Starring Toni Lamond, musical royalty of the stage and an equally talented Phill Scott and Virginia Gay
as support acts, the trio performed songs with a personal touch.

One memorable number of the evening was Virginia's rendition of Guy Sebastian's "Like it like that" - let's just say it left room for some vivid imagining.

Tokonoma Shochu Bar & Lounge opening

A number of mesmerising gowns from Akira Isogawa's only previously viewed in Paris Collection added to one very eye-pleasing set up at the new Tokonoma Shochu Bar and Lounge launch party (just next door to Toko Restaraunt in Surry Hills).

Over some delicious Toko bite-sized canapes and chilli infused edamame we deliberated over which cuisine one would pick if you could only have one for every meal for the rest of your long years (Japanese won, with Italian coming a close second).

It wouldn't hurt to add in a beverage selected by Paul Birtwistle, Australia's very own Sake Sommelier:
Hakka Martini - Shiro shochu with Hendricks gin, cucumber and mint
Gen awa cha - Lychee bubble tea with Genmaicha infused shiro shochu, lemon and lychee jelly
Negroni swizzle - Whitley Neill, Antica Formula and Campari infused with pineapple, aged and swizzled with homemade falernum and orange wedges

Sydney's yellow balloon - a symbol of hope, optimism, renewal and ideas

The Sydney Festival has launched it's 2010 program (more of that on Monday's issue).

Besides a line-up of fabulousness we're loving the new yellow balloon.  It's the unifying emblem of the 2010 Festival – "a symbol of hope, optimism, renewal and ideas".

Expect them to pop up around town, and in the meantime, check out their flickr photo stream

Good Charlotte, nice curves and Midori Adores - Blackberry 8520 launch

Benji and Joel Madden flew in for the BlackBerry Curve 8520 launch held at Simmer on the Bay. And whilst rain kept everyone inside, no one really cared; Good Charlotte was spinning the sets.

Remember Midori Illusions? It's been a while, but with Midori behind the bars teen memories of Splice-flavoured shots came flooding back.

Speaking of the green stuff, Midori Adores has today launched a new hub for women to find out what is new and exciting amongst fashion, lifestyle, music and design. All content will be provided by amazing Australian online women (including yours truly). There will also be the chance to win fabulous and fun prizes (think a trip to Fashion Week New York with two girlfriends) and learn how to make some delish Midori summer cocktails.

Incu presents Topshop in Sydney - ground zero on opening day

Yesterday, Topshop opened in Sydney. With Incu presents Topshop, the Wu brothers (owners of avant garde retail company Incu) have orchestrated a classic coup d’état:

Captured - exclusive distributor title for Topshop in Australia.
Seized - pieces from mainline
Topshop, Kate Moss for Topshop, Topman and Topshop Unique.
Violence - a little to your credit card.
Infrastructure - Incu's Paddington store newly refurbished, top level.

During my early twenties living in London I had access to Topshop - the epic UK retail chain influencing every thread worn in the industry.  It was about a 15 minute walk away from home, and during the 4 years there, that walk was taken often.

It was one of the stores you could religiously rely on for any outfit on a budget - whether for a dress up party or black tie.

The range is somewhat smaller here in Sydney (eventually just the top level of Incu's Paddington store), but we're still super happy. UK High Street trends here without the time or jet lag.

There's just one hitch; that privilege comes with a price tag.

Break down of a fabulous Stretch Weave Topshop Unique dress
Topshop online £85 (approx AU$ 153)
Retail Price AU$ 300

Yes, I could have waited 8 days, ordered online and added the additional £7.50 stand (approx $13.55) delivery charge. But I didn't. It fit in the dressing room and the dress was worn last night.

The Australian Art Weekend - motivations for buying art

Can art be considered as a commodity?

Kate Shearer, one of the first emerging artists we spoke to at The Australian Art Weekend Sydney VIP night, certainly made us wonder. She showed us her LV Jerry Can (Jerry Can, Gold plated cap, leather, nylon and plastic) and it set the scene for the evening.

More than 80 galleries showing art for all tastes, at affordable prices ($500 would have your wall covered).  And we were thrilled to see our favourite lady exhibiting – Nanami Cowdroy (Daily Addict’s branding and featured artist).

VIP opening night gallery notes:
1. Kate Shearer www.kateshearer.com (LV Jerry can challenging the motivation for buying art)
2. Mesha Sendyk www.meshasendyk.com (shine light on to Mesha’s visual KAN IX mixed media and resin on canvas and watch it dance)
3. Eugene Tan www.aquabumps.com (Ocean and surfing photography – see his daily email newsletter for stunning daily escapism)
4. Nanami Cowdroy www.nthread.net (the most divinely hand drawn and ink blown gold fish you’ll ever see)
5. Mark Hanham (red hat) http://markhanham.net/ (from iconic Coca Cola signs to how cute is that bird?)
