Efendy Istanbul Celebration Dinner

The Vitals: Efendy Istanbul Celebration Dinner

What went on:  Turkish food lovers joined the Turkish Consulate and Australian media at a one-off celebration dinner to commemorate the cuisine of Istanbul. Hosted by Chef Somer Sivrioglu of Efendy Restaurant in Balmain and Turkish cookbook author Deniz Gokturk Akcakanat, the evening was a journey of never ending authentic Turkish fare, breads and pastries, live Turkish music from Alin and Melike and warm Turkish hospitality.

What we’re addicted to: Turkish cuisine is a millennium+ old (they've had time to perfect a rich mix of regional styles) and it's difficult not to be delighted by traditional recipes and their mezes (small tapas like dishes). Think Kadayifli Karides (Shredded pastry wrapped king prawns, walnut, capsicum, garlic muhammara) and Saksuka (traditional sauteed potato, zucchini, eggplant with mint yoghurt).

What we’re not: Ok, it has to be said, whilst Koc Yumurtasi (Pan-fried lamb testicles, almond garlic tarator) might taste favourable it's just too difficult a mental barrier to overcome. Turkish psychic Deniz was on hand to give coffee cup readings - one editor is sure she's not going to end up living in the Blue Mountains any time soon.

What else:
Turkish Bakery Delight by Deniz Akcakanat is published by New Holland RRP: $29.95

New Conservatory Bar and Terrace launch

The Vitals: Conservatory Bar & Terrace Sheraton on the Park launch

What went on: The unveiling of Sheraton On the Park's $250,000 refurbished bar and terrace.

What we’re addicted to: Extensive wines of the world and cocktails menu (guests were quick to try the Ron Zacapa cocktails).  A temporary YSL makeup booth kept the ladies looking their best and that Camilla Franks gave the top Sydney Dressed accolade to two worthy ladies.  One to Livia Tassanyi (9-5) dressed in a by Johnny red dress and the other to a lady dressed in a traditional Indian sari. More choice when you're having a CBD post work drinks. You can mingle at "The Great" communal table made from recycled Iron Timber, or stay out of sight in one of the rounded booth "concaves". When it gets warmer go al fresco on the outdoor terrace.

What we’re not: Conservatory Bar & Terrace at Sheraton on The Park ... it's kind of a mouth full.

What else: Gregg Arthur plays live on the piano every Thursday and Friday night. Open 5pm till late Sunday to Wednesday and from 2.30pm till late Thursday - Sunday.

What we're addicted to: The live trumpet player mixing his tunes to the beats spun by DJ Reflex (Lady Gaga's protégé)

What we're not: The number of dollars we will have to part with to own one of these exquisite watches

World Class Competition Australia finals

The vitals: The Australian Final of the World Class Competition 2010

What went on:  A selection of canapés paired to luxurious spirits and exceptional cocktails created by Australia’s top bartending talent. Celebrating the World Class Competition – the art of bartending, putting the best bartenders across the nation through grueling tests of creativity and skill to find the best bartender in Australia.  After a day of competing in the Australian World Class Final Adam Brewer from Sling Lounge was announced the winner and chosen to represent Australia in the Global Final in Greece.

What we're addicted to: The pure invention process. Case in point: Jan Liska of Sydney’s Zeta Bar for his unique culinary twist on the classic breakfast martini. The drink was served with chamomile tea and hot waffle toast topped with homemade Tanqueray No. TEN marmalade and an ice cream infused with the flavours of bacon and eggs.

What we're not: There’s really only so much you can drink in one day. We’re the responsible type you know.

Sydney Opera House New Year's Eve 2009 Party

Watching the sun set across our beautiful harbour with a signature martini concocted by one dexterous bartender in hand really is a perfect way to celebrate the beginning of a new decade.

Lifestyle specialists, Yakusan and the Sydney Opera House transformed the western boardwalk into a lavish oasis complete with cabanas, plunge pools and model like waiters serving our every whim.

In keep with the theme of pure luxury, Chef extraordinaire Matt Moran designed a unique menu especially for the event with an abundant selection of gourmet delicacies, personalised service of fresh oysters, mini wagyu beef burgers and the Moran's family lamb.

International DJ, Samantha Ronson headlined the night with her mixes of the classics from the Jackson Five to the Kings of Leon.  Sets by Goldfish and Jon Sa Trinxa (Pacha Ibiza residents) and a host of local Australian DJs including Dolso (Sneaky Sound System) and Ian Spicer rocked the evening; along with an appearance by Australian fashion designer come guest DJ, Kirrily Johnson.

At the stroke of Midnight, the 750 guests turned their attention to the spectacular Harbour Bridge and city skyline fireworks with many hoping twenty ten might continue reminiscent of the evening- full of fun, opulence and style.

Much gratitude for the special touches: after 9 hours of partying in heels I welcomed some respite. Thank you to Flipsters for providing the ladies with a pair of comfortable yet stylish flats.

Wishing all of our fabulous readers a brilliant 2010 filled with love, laughter and fruitful possibilities x

Paspaley Polo in the City - a dash for the dashing

The marquees were up, the sun was shining. Champagne free-flowing and men in polo attire on powerful steeds.

The 2009 Polo in the City Series is a highlight of the social calendar and the G.H. Mumm Marquee the hot ticket. This year those with the right coloured wrist band could toast all day, and down freshly shucked oysters by Two hated chef, Warren Turnbull. The “it” accessory had to be a G.H. Mumm fan or umbrella (last year's was the red galoshes).

Have a look at these pics for the Mumm Dash - a classic (and somewhat startling) sight watching well-dressed ladies kick off their heels and bolt for G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge Champagne. Congratulations to Amanda - her strategy? "There was a bit of jostling at the start but I stayed completely focused on the prize".

We expect more from the Stella Artois men's dash next time - the ladies drew blood!

Sydney Fashion Week

Armed with sheer purpose, a keen curiosity and too many wardrobe changes, we set out this week to cover real time (and survive) our first Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.

It's a truly exhausting endeavour to twitter and post our pics from the shows and backstage, and a privilege to be one of the first to give you a peak at what our top Fashion designer's have in store with their Australian Fashion Spring Summer 2009-2010 collections.

In speaking with the organisers, this year is by far the largest contingent of social media (blogger and online media) ever to attend a Fashion Week in Sydney. We're sure it's the start of something new and needed. You can see the full #RAFW twitter stream here.

Any thoughts or insights on what we could have done differently pipe up here.
